Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Desktop
Upgrade procedure
As always,
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reboot
sudo do-release-upgrade
Everything works automatically, system reboots and just works but some glitches remain.
Default Desktop
The default desktop reverted to Ubuntu Gnome for my user account, although this was set to use Mate before (and Mate was upgraded and worked more or less without an issue). Had to switch that back manually.
In the course of this, I also tried again some other desktop manager (Budgie is no longer available by default it seems) but Cinnamon, Gnome and Ubuntu-flavoured Gnome do not cut it in my opinion. So back to the somewhat dated Mate desktop environment, which looks and feels like Windows95 meanwhile.
Nitrokey FIDO U2F for passwordless login does not work any more
A while ago, I had passwordless login configured, which allows me to log in to the machine with a FIDO U2F key instead of typing my password any time I want to log in or some service requires an authentication step.
The configuration based on a HowTo from heise.de was working fine for a while, but after the update from 20.04 LTS to 22.04 LTS and subsequently to 24.04 LTS, the key was not recognized correctly any more.
Steam Counter Strike 2 does not work any more
CS:2 had more and more issues on the rather old 20.04 setup already and won't run stable or performant enough, which is hillarious, given the age of that game. After the update it kept crashing shortly after launch. I fumbled a bit with the startup options, but it could not be resolved. I am too lazy to fix this.
Summary
Not perfect, but overall, it appears to work.
Some fine tuning is needed to get minor issues resolved.
