Well...
Normally you should find some more info about my private life and my private interests on this page.

Beside hanging around in front of computers a lot, I am interested in sports (fitness training, jogging, cycling, swimming) graphics and art, cinema, traveling, literature.

Because I regard all this as pretty normal hobbies, I won't tell you much more about it.
clear

Computers
Nerdy stuff ahead: This is of course important enough to be mentioned here ;-)), as I would not be able to write and publish these pages without my machines.

I run way too many computers. Five IBM-compatible PC's and one Android smartphone plus an Intel Celeron with onboard graphics, which serves as a cheap surfing-machine for my parents, running Ubuntu 18.04 Linux and thus preventing a lot of headaches regarding trojans, viruses and other malware.

My current desktop is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT with 32 GB RAM and a nVidia GeForce RTX 3070 running Ubuntu 20.04.

Read my installation-notes regarding Gentoo-Linux, Fedora Core 3, Fedora Core 6, Fedora 8, Fedora 10, Fedora 13 and Fedora 14 as well as my CentOS page.

See also my review on Linux on Laptops which I compiled for the two machines I have used for my work as well as a less outdated page about Linux on Lenovo Thinkpads.

There are three pages related to my Palm, Nokia and Android phones, but they are not too exiting and pretty outdated by now.

For some time I had to cope with a Mac, but you won't find any info about Apple-computers on my site anymore.

I play Unreal Tournament 2004 (no, not really any more), Counter-Strike and X-Plane (if I have the time).

If I don't play, I toy around with Linux and bioinformatics-tools, programming stuff and playing (again :-)) with my media center. I used to run a game-server on local LAN-party's with friends (6-15 people at most). In between I became a bit more fundamentalistic regarding operating systems, and had to setup Wine and Cedega to get some of the Windows-stuff to work on my FC3-box, but this changed again and I am either playing Linux-native games or stuff on Windows 10.

STOP! That's it! Really! Nothing else to tell!

Pretty boring, eh? You have been warned.
Marc Sarichttps://www.marcsaric.de/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Sidebar&diff=3073MediaWiki:Sidebar2023-11-11T18:44:25Z
Marc Saric:

Beware, I support most of what Tristan Harris has to say about Smartphones -in short, I think most apps are shit and a means to occupy your attention. On top of that, Android (and iOS) are some sort of scam to make you give away your private data.
Beware, I support most of what Tristan Harris has to say about Smartphones -in short, I think most apps are shit and a means to occupy your attention. On top of that, Android (and iOS) are some sort of scam to make you give away your private data. Find the more elaborate and more differentiated arguments on https://medium.com/thrive-global/distracted-in-2016-reboot-your-phone-with-mindfulness-9f4c8ad46538

* First thing: Install some self hosted calendaring and cloud software (I use Zimbra, as I don't have much need for file storage). Otherwise ownCloud or Nextcloud may be your thing.
* Second: Encrypt your device and it's SD-Card
* Follow one of the various How Tos for securing your device and disabling/uninstalling unwanted apps.
* Pay for the non-advertisement version of the apps you like (none of them cost serious money). Also -or especially- the Open Source ones. Even if they are only donationware.
It is running the current Android release, whatever that may be (I seem to be bored).

Things I like
Basically the same as for the previous phone

Things I don't like
Basically the same as for the previous phone

Things which might have prevented me from buying the phone had I known them before
Nothing really, it does what it is supposed to do, but it is decidedly unspectacular.

Verdict
Quite nice so far.
Marc Sarichttps://www.marcsaric.de/index.php?title=Google_Pixel_2XL&diff=3066Google Pixel 2XL2023-10-06T13:55:57Z
Marc Saric:

Random rants about my previous smartphone. See Google Pixel 6a for the current one.

It is running Android 9.0, it is pretty much a mainstream-device, not hacked (no intention of doing so as long as the warranty lasts and/or Google provides decent software updates) so there will be no hard-to-find secrets on this page.

Things I like
* Large
* Fast
* Very good software updates support.

Things I don't like
* It has no card-slot
* Quite overpriced
* Some of the unneccessary apps can't be uninstalled (Google *cough* Photos *cough*)
* Somewhat slippery surface
* Android (and Android apps in general) feel like an excuse to spam people with advertisements and nag-screens. WTF? Even paid apps sometimes still show adverts or start being anoying by asking for Play-store ratings etc.
* The camera apps internal picture-preview seems to depend on some Google-crap and does not work, if most of that has been replaced by alternatives.
* Charger has an USB-C plug. So not useable with standard cables, which come with an large USB jack on one end.
* Support for transferring apps, settings and data between an old and the new phone is a bad joke. At least you only have to do it once.
* Google stopped all support for the device in October of 2020.

Things which might have prevented me from buying the phone had I known them before
None so far.

As everybody left the open web to pay with their data for "free" access to social media platforms, I did the same. I am no longer active on Facebook because it sucks too much (even more so since 2018).

The earliest incarnation of this site went online around 1997, after the University of Bochum supplied a server for student-homepages (there has been an older parallel version hosted by a free homepage-provider, which dates from the end of 1996, written entirely in german -which means I am online for more than 25 years now :-) ) (however -looking back over this abyss of Internet-time, I am not quite sure I want people to look at the stuff I produced back then =8-[]).

Python is a portable, object-oriented and last but not least easy-to-learn scripting language which can be used for everything from throwaway-scripting to complete applications .

Because it is quite easy to read and to understand, and because it is portable and especially because much stuff for processing PDB-files (containing information about molecular models (Proteins, RNA, organic and inorganic molecules) already existed, I had chosen Python as the implementation language for some data-parsing and conversion tools I desperately needed during and shortly after my diploma-work.

More recently I have written some glue-logic for my Ph.D. work (macromolecular crystallography) which does more or less similar things as the GROMOS96-scripts: Input-generation and some logfile-parsing.

I got lucky in being paid to program in Python during my industry-career at Exelixis, BASF Plant Science as well as BASF Business Services.

Random rants about my current smartphone.

It is running Android 9.0, it is pretty much a mainstream-device, not hacked (no intention of doing so as long as the warranty lasts and/or Google provides decent software updates) so there will be no hard-to-find secrets on this page.

Things I like
* Large
* Fast
* Very good software updates support.

Things I don't like
* It has no card-slot
* Quite overpriced
* Some of the unneccessary apps can't be uninstalled (Google *cough* Photos *cough*)
* Somewhat slippery surface

Verdict
Nice so far.
Marc Sarichttps://www.marcsaric.de/index.php?title=Main_Page&diff=3031Main Page2021-12-23T13:48:43Z
Marc Saric:

My Linux-experience
I have been using Linux (mostly in a dual-boot environment) since around 1996 or 1997 (Cheapbytes CD from Lehmanns bookstore with Debian 1.24 on a Pentium 133 MHz).

The most recent version of this page has been created with Linux tools alone and is hosted on a Linux box. Some images and older sediments of my site may incorporate Windows-generated images, but nowadays I have switched to Open Source tools to create everything I want to show here.

Until recently I have been developing Web-based applications on Linux- and Apple-machines, using Mozilla, PHP, Perl, Python, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Eclipse to program distributed bioinformatics database-applications.

Beside that I was heavily depending on a stable machine to do my Ph.D., which was one of the two main reasons for switching from Windows NT to SuSE-Linux and finally Fedora and Ubuntu.

Pictures
Because people always want to see screenshots here are some of my home-desktop. They are slightly recursive, the first one shows an editing-session of this HTML-page, running SuSE 7.3/KDE 2.2 with an IceWM-theme, the second one shows the upload of the homepage, running SuSE 8.1/KDE 3.0 with the Quartz theme and some nice tools. The third one is SuSE 9.1 KDE 3.2.1 and Gimp 2.0 the next is from the Fedora Core 3 installation on my AMD Athlon64 running Gnome 2.8 followed by a few shots from the FC6 install with 3D effects enabled. Next Fedora 10 Linux and Fedora 13 Linux and CentOS 6 and currently Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop. Apparently I like blue backgrounds...
Gentoo Linux on Small Systems
Installing one of the more recent distros on an old system (aka my 300 MHz PII) is not really fun.

Except for the fact, that a small hard disk is quickly filled up by a load of gunk you might not need at all (but which is installed anyway, if you don't select rpm-packages by hand), those distros tend to be painfully slow (the current version of Quanta IS dead-slow even on my AMD Duron 700 (yess, CPUs have arrived ad 6.0 GHz meanwhile, I know)), and take eons to load the desktop (why? I was running Linux on my 486 ages ago).

There seems to be no real hope for a fast-and-small version of SuSE, therefore I had to look for something else.

Enter Gentoo-Linux: (I have to admit, that almost everything which follows, has been stolen from an email I got from a friend, who setup all this on his machine ;-)).

Anyway, if you are interested in my installation-notes for a small-footprint Gentoo-system, read on.

Fedora
Several years ago I switched from my long-time favorite Linux-distribution to Fedora Core 3.
Installation notes for Fedora Core 3 Linux
Permian period. My first stab at Fedora Linux after I switched from SuSE. Quite some manual effort here compared to more recent distros.

Installation notes for Fedora Core 6 Linux
Jurrassic age. One of the more unstable Fedora releases.

Installation notes for Fedora 8 Linux
Stone age. A better one (compared to the previous install).

Installation notes for Fedora 10 Linux
Very outdated. Some major havoc with Sun Java. Apart from that, the install becomes more and more <strike>boring</strike> mainstream

Installation notes for Fedora 13 Linux
Outdated. New install, new glitches, among them one, which cropped up in the current Ubuntu install.

Installation notes for Fedora 14 Linux
The last Fedora. I switched to CentOS afterwards.

CentOS
Installation notes for 4.3
Some time ago I had to setup a 64-bit 4-way server and decided to give CentOS a shot. Having ordered a floppy-drive ("who really needs that nowadays") immediately paid off, because the RAID-Controller was not recognized and a newer kernel-module had to be installed from a boot-floppy (not a problem, unless you can't use one).

Installation notes for 6.2
After everyone decided, that the new GUI for Linux should look like a Smartphone, I moved from Fedora to CentOS 6 (which also has a longer life-time and does not force you to install a new OS every 1,5 years or so).

Ubuntu Linux
Installing Ubuntu 7.10
Read my review on installing Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I did this recently for one of my older machines, because the old Ubuntu-version was no longer supported.

I have built a XBMC based Home Theater PC (HTPC) using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit on an Intel platform.

Installing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bit
My last PC died from Capacitor plague after more than 6 years, so I had to buy a new one. CentOS 7 was not quite ready, so I choose the new Ubuntu LTS. Read my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop installation notes.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 bit
As the update client kept nagging me, that a new version is out, I followed that advice and updated the existing system to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Read my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Desktop upgrade notes.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 64 bit
I did an upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Reading my Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop page is worthless, as it is empty (nothing to fiddle around with there).

Upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64 bit
There are some decent games out there, which run natively on Linux (see above :-) ).

With Steam-support the number of games natively supported on Linux has been quite OK recently, although some already wrote it of and -of course- many block buster releases are Windows (or console) only.

Running Windows games on Linux is mostly not fun, so I ditched that and run Windows games on Windows nowadays.
In between I became a bit more fundamentalistic regarding operating systems, and had to setup Wine and Cedega to get some of the Windows-stuff to work on my FC3-box, but this changed again and I am either playing Linux-native games or stuff on Windows 10.
From 2013 on I worked as a Senior Consultant for the IT branch of BASF group (which has recently been rebranded as BASF Business Services GmbH -but we still do IT ;-).

I did my biology diploma in biophysics, the title is: "Simulation von Large-Scale Motions bei der Substratbindung von Rubisco".
It was part of a joint project of the Theoretical Biophysics Group and the Lehrstuhl für Biochemie der Pflanzen .

Molecular Modelling of Rubisco
Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-Carboxylase/Oxygenase(Rubisco for short) is the most common protein in the biosphere of the earth. It´s purpose is to catalyze the addition of carbon dioxide on a small sugar-molecule (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate), the most important step in the dark- reaction of photosynthesis.

My part of the work was the simulation and analysis of large conformational changes during the substrate-binding process with help of a newly developed GROMOS-based force-field (Schlitter et al.), which can simulate solvent-effects without simulating the solvent itself (thus leading to a tenfold increase in computation-speed compared to simulations with an explicit waterbox).

----

Pictures
One of the fascinating parts of computer simulation of molecular processes is the fact that you get incredibly nice graphics ;-)

Here are some examples of what Rubisco looks like, together with some short interpretation of the structure and function of the molecule.
All pictures are made from the 8RUB.PDB-structure from the Brookhaven Protein-Database (afaik this structure has been replaced by a better one recently), and have been rendered using SwissPDBViewer/DeepView and Povray , both programs based on WIN95 running on my P133, 24 MB back in 1999.
Installation: Things which...
...work out of the box
Downright boring. Installation of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Desktop 64 bit from an USB-stick. Everything obvious (graphics, touchpad, display, WiFi) works right out of the box.

...work with tweaking
Despite ordering a new 48 Wh replacement battery from Sanyo, the laptop drains a full battery quite fast if running Ubuntu 16.04 (as most Linux distros do without power optimization).

Checking the battery with

upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0

reveals, that the battery is OK as advertised.

See http://thinkwiki.de/TLP_-_Linux_Stromsparen (in german, but it is only about TLP) for some hints specifically geared towards Thinkpads:

tl;dr:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-dkms
service tlp start

See how this improves runtime.

The network currently has issues when the laptop comes back from hibernation. This has not been the case at the beginning, so I suspect an issue with the current kernel as this seems to be kernel-module related (
sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service
does not solve it). See e.g. https://askubuntu.com/questions/761180/wifi-doesnt-work-after-suspend-after-16-04-upgrade or https://askubuntu.com/questions/452826/wireless-networking-not-working-after-resume-in-ubuntu-14-04. The solution for me was to reload the kernel modules in question with
sudo rmmod iwldvm && sudo rmmod iwlwifi && sudo modprobe iwlwifi && sudo modprobe iwldvm

...don't work
The Thinkpad special key -but who cares.

The aftermarket battery died on me after only 9 month of regular use. This is crap. However on the very positive side, the retailer immediately and without any fuss sent a replacement battery even without further proof, that the old battery was indeed broken.

This is hardly an issue with old Thinkpads, rather one with aftermarket batteries. I should probably have kept the original battery and bought a new original Lenovo battery indepenently instead. Who knows. We will see, how long the second aftermarket battery will last.

More recently, the Windows 10 partition died somehow. No detectable disk issues, so I would rule out hardware problems. This happened after the upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, but I am not aware, that the NTFS driver did something to the Windows partition.

As it could not be restored using the on-board recovery, I wiped it and nowadays, there is no Windows on that machine any more.

Recommendation
Buy. New Ultrabooks are probably thinner and may have full-HD-screens but cost 3x the money of this system. The only real advantage may be a longer runtime with a small battery due to the low-power CPUs (which are not really faster than the > 3 year old CPU of this machine). However, you could buy a 9-cell battery pack + an extra second battery pack if you don't mind the extra kilogram of weight.

Update
The Laptop went through two OS-updates and a disk repartitioning, now running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS only. The original battery died after some time and was replaced by the vendor. I still think, that this is the best Laptop I ever had.
Marc Sarichttps://www.marcsaric.de/index.php?title=Ubuntu_16.04_LTS_on_Lenovo_Thinkpad_x230&diff=3008Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on Lenovo Thinkpad x2302020-05-18T14:44:53Z
Marc Saric:

Currently, the page runs on a MediaWiki, using the Chameleon skin with fixed header layout.

Between December 2002 and January 2006 the page has been hosted by http://www.1und1.com, from January 2006 to December 2019 it resided on a virtual server at https://www.server4you.de, and since December 2019, it is being hosted on https://contabo.de/. The public URL has always been http://www.marcsaric.de since 2006.
Since 25th of May 2018, the Internet got a lot safer by adding more legalese. Read the DSGVO-Disclaimer if you must.
2019 I switched jobs again. Writing software and supporting research people.
Good bye research.

Five years into green biotech it was time to try something new (my former employer helped me in this by deciding it was time to leave Germany (mostly)). From 2013 on I worked as a Senior Consultant for the IT branch of BASF group (which has recently been rebranded as BASF Business Services GmbH -but we still do IT ;-).
Between July 2007 and December 2012 I worked for BASF Plant Science Company GmbH as a Bioinformatician, having fun with databases and Microsoft integrated development tools.
After my first not so lucky visit to the world of economy and free markets, I decided it would be the right move to do some post-doctoral studies. Until mid-2007 I have been working as a bioinformatics computer scientist at the MPI for Developmental Biology in Tübingen.

I worked on implementing a microarray-database for the ZF-Models-project, which has been showcased in Seattle. Doing so I had to learn a bit more about Apple computers, Perl (particulary Bioperl) and PHP.

If I have the time, I write something up regarding striped fish, microarray-analysis and web-based databases...

Beside doing IT, I have done a larger study on Staphylococcus aureus which has been published in Proteomics.
Welcome to my personal Python page. You will only find some links to other sites, as I haven't had time or energy to put together some stuff of general interest.

I got lucky in being paid to program in Python during my industry-career at Exelixis, BASF Plant Science as well as BASF Business Services.
from now on, still not bad compared to Java or Visual Basic.
